Pigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns we see at Purified Rituals - and also one of the most misunderstood.
Because not all pigmentation is the same.
The treatment approach that may support post-acne marks isn't necessarily the same approach we'd recommend for melasma, sun damage or hormonally influenced pigmentation. And for meaningful, long-term change, more isn't always better.
Understanding what type of pigmentation you're experiencing, what may be contributing to it, and how your skin is functioning as a whole is where we begin.
Here, we're breaking down the different types of pigmentation, the treatments that may support them, why daily sun protection does more work than any single treatment, and why consistency matters when you're working towards clearer, healthier-looking skin.
What is skin pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation refers to areas of discolouration caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. When melanin is produced unevenly, it can create darker patches or spots on the skin's surface or within deeper layers of the skin.
Pigmentation can range from subtle to highly visible and can become more noticeable after sun exposure.
The most common forms include:
- Sun damage and age spots: caused by cumulative UV exposure, these flat brown marks commonly appear on areas such as the face, hands and chest.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): dark marks that can remain after acne, injury or inflammation.
- Melasma: a complex form of pigmentation, usually appearing as symmetrical patches across the forehead, cheeks, upper lip or jawline. Genetics play a significant part, with around 6 in 10 people reporting a family history. Hormonal changes such as pregnancy or the contraceptive pill are a factor for some. And both UV and visible light are consistent triggers, which is why melasma so often deepens over a Melbourne summer and quietens through winter.
- Uneven skin tone: general dullness or patchiness without one clearly defined area, which may occur alongside congestion, dehydration or surface build-up.
Different forms of pigmentation can require very different approaches, which is why we don't believe in choosing a treatment simply because pigmentation appears on the treatment's benefits list.
At Purified Rituals, we begin by understanding your skin, your pigmentation and the factors that may be influencing it before recommending a treatment pathway.
Sun protection does more work than any single treatment
This is the part of a pigmentation plan that gets the least attention and delivers the most.
Melanin production is triggered by light. Every unprotected day adds to the pigment your treatments are working to reduce, which means daily protection isn't a finishing touch on your plan. It's the foundation the rest of it sits on.
What we recommend to every client working on pigmentation:
- A broad-spectrum SPF50+, every day, all year. Not just in summer, and not just on beach days. Melbourne's UV is high enough to drive pigment well outside the warmer months.
- For melasma, choose a tinted formula containing iron oxides. Standard sunscreen filters UV but lets visible light through, and visible light is a known melasma trigger. Iron oxides are what block it. A tinted SPF is doing something a clear one cannot.
- Reapply. One morning application won't hold across a full day, particularly if you're outdoors or near windows.
- Add shade, a hat and sunglasses where you can. Heat is also thought to play a role in melasma, so it's worth being mindful of prolonged warmth on the face.
We'll talk through the right formulation for your skin during Skin Ritual Mapping. Without this piece in place, even a well-designed treatment plan is working against a daily reset.
Why melasma requires a considered approach
Melasma isn't something we approach with a “stronger is better” mentality.
Unlike pigmentation caused by a single breakout or isolated sun damage, melasma can be complex and influenced by multiple factors. This means an overly aggressive approach isn't necessarily the most effective approach for your skin. In some cases it can make pigment worse or harder to treat later.
Instead, we look at the bigger picture: your skin's current condition, barrier health, pigmentation pattern, lifestyle and treatment history before deciding where to begin.
From there, your treatment plan may combine carefully selected professional treatments with prescribed home care, daily sun protection and ongoing review.
One honest thing worth saying early. Melasma is a condition we manage rather than cure. Even after a good result, pigment can return with summer sun, a hormonal change or a break in your sun protection. That isn't a failed treatment, it's the nature of the condition, and it's why the maintenance phase matters as much as the correcting phase. We'd rather set that expectation now than have you feel let down next February.
Because pigmentation management isn't about chasing a quick fix. It's about knowing when to Reset, when to Repair and how to Maintain the progress you've made.
Pigmentation treatments at Purified Rituals
There isn't one universally “best” treatment for pigmentation.
The right approach depends on the type of pigmentation you're experiencing, your skin's current condition and where you are in your skin health journey.
At Purified Rituals, treatments are prescribed rather than selected from a menu in isolation. Depending on your skin, your pathway may include one or a combination of the following.
The Clinical Peel Ritual
The Clinical Peel Ritual sits within the Repair phase of the Purified Rituals journey and is designed to deliver measurable skin improvement while supporting skin healing, renewal and barrier health.
Your O Cosmedics clinical peel is prescribed according to your skin goals and may be selected to support concerns including pigmentation, uneven skin tone, congestion, uneven texture and early signs of ageing.
Rather than treating every skin with the same peel or intensity, each ritual is considered according to your skin's current condition and treatment history.
Why depth and timing are prescribed, not chosen. Peels aren't risk free on pigmented skin. Too much too soon can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and on melasma in particular an over-aggressive peel can deepen the pigment rather than lift it. This is why skin preparation is required before commencing a clinical peel program, and another reason we recommend beginning with Skin Ritual Mapping rather than choosing a treatment in isolation.
The Advanced Skin Ritual
The Advanced Skin Ritual combines targeted clinical modalities with restorative touch to support progressive, long-term skin health.
Powered by O Cosmedics skincare and advanced skin technologies, this multi-modality ritual may be prescribed when concerns such as uneven skin tone, dullness, congestion, dehydration and early signs of ageing are present.
Treatment elements are selected according to what your skin needs on the day, allowing your therapist to support visible progress without losing sight of overall skin function and resilience.
Dermapen4™ Skin Needling
Dermapen4™ Skin Needling is one of our advanced collagen-stimulating treatments and may be prescribed to support concerns including pigmentation, uneven skin tone, acne scarring, fine lines and uneven texture.
The treatment creates controlled micro-channels within the skin to encourage its natural repair response and support collagen production.
Results are progressive rather than instant, which is why Skin Mapping, preparation and a considered treatment program are an important part of the process.
If melasma is your main concern, this isn't where we start. Skin needling can be a strong option for post-acne marks, texture and scarring. For melasma it carries a genuine risk of pigment returning or becoming more resistant to treatment, so it's used selectively, in experienced hands, and usually only once the skin has been well prepared and settled. Expect us to begin somewhere gentler and build from there.
Your treatment frequency and pathway will be prescribed according to your skin's condition, treatment history and long-term goals.
Where to start: Skin Ritual Mapping
If you're unsure which treatment is right for your pigmentation, you don't need to diagnose your skin or choose the “perfect” treatment yourself.
Skin Ritual Mapping is our signature consultation and the starting point of your skin journey at Purified Rituals.
Through an unhurried skin analysis and lifestyle conversation, we look at your skin's current condition, treatment history, concerns and goals before prescribing what comes next.
This takes the guesswork out of treatment selection and allows us to build a pathway focused on long-term skin health rather than simply treating what we can see on the surface.
Questions we’re often asked about pigmentation treatments
What is the best treatment for melasma?
There isn't one treatment that is automatically right for every case of melasma. Because melasma can be complex and influenced by several factors, we recommend beginning with Skin Ritual Mapping so your skin can be properly assessed. Your pathway may include carefully prescribed professional treatments, home care and daily sun protection, with treatment choices guided by how your individual skin responds. Melasma is also managed rather than cured, so the plan will include holding your result as well as improving it.
Will sunscreen actually make a difference to my pigmentation?
More than any single treatment. Pigment is produced in response to light, so unprotected days work against everything a treatment plan is trying to achieve. We recommend a broad-spectrum SPF50+ daily, year round. If you have melasma, choose a tinted formulation containing iron oxides, because visible light is a known trigger and clear sunscreens don't filter it. Your therapist can recommend a formulation that suits your skin during your consultation.
Does microneedling help with pigmentation?
Dermapen4™ Skin Needling may be prescribed for some types of pigmentation as part of a broader treatment plan, particularly post-acne marks and uneven texture. For melasma it's a different conversation. Needling carries a real risk of pigment returning or becoming harder to treat, so it isn't our usual starting point and would only be considered selectively, after preparation, if it suited your skin. Whether it's appropriate for you depends on your pigmentation type, skin condition and treatment history.
How long does pigmentation treatment take to work?
Pigmentation doesn't follow one universal timeline. Surface-level concerns may respond differently from deeper or hormonally influenced pigmentation such as melasma. In many cases, meaningful improvement comes from a consistent treatment pathway over time rather than a single appointment. With melasma, it's also realistic to plan for ongoing maintenance rather than a fixed end point, because pigment can return with sun exposure or hormonal change. Your therapist can give you a more realistic indication after assessing your skin.
Can clinical peels help with uneven skin tone?
Clinical peels may be prescribed to support pigmentation, uneven tone, dullness and texture. At Purified Rituals, our Clinical Peel Ritual uses O Cosmedics professional peel formulations selected according to your individual skin goals and condition. Skin preparation is required before commencing this treatment, because a peel that's too strong or too soon can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or worsen existing pigment. Prescribing the right depth and spacing is the part that protects your result.
Is pigmentation treatment suitable for darker skin tones?
Yes, with the right approach. Deeper skin tones do carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from peels and energy-based treatments, which means treatment intensity, spacing and preparation all need to be adjusted rather than applied from a standard protocol. That's a reason for care, not a reason to avoid treatment. Pigmentation type, skin condition, treatment history and individual risk factors are all assessed during Skin Ritual Mapping so your therapist can determine the safest and most appropriate pathway for your skin.
Long-term skin health at Purified Rituals
Lasting skin health isn't built in a single appointment.
Your skin changes with seasons, lifestyle, hormones, stress and the environment around you. That's why our approach isn't centred around repeating the exact same treatment every month.
Instead, we work through a connected journey of Reset, Repair and Maintain, prescribing each ritual according to what your skin needs at that stage.
For clients working on concerns such as pigmentation over time, this consistency can be especially important. It gives us the opportunity to monitor progress, adjust treatments and support your skin as its needs evolve. With melasma in particular, the Maintain phase is what holds the result you've worked for.
